Currently have $2121.60 in the Club fund. Several people’s dues were paid this evening.

Old Business

Minutes – The November minutes are on line. Review at your leisure.

Large Shed – The shed has been moved back to the flying field. The mower is safely inside. The lock code is 7805.

October Fun Fly – A huge success!! Event winners: Sudden Death – Pat Bowman, Spot Landing – Richard Plummer, Raffle Winner – Lyle Westoby

Field Rules – Review one time for everyone to consider for the new year. Please remember to keep the field trash free. If you bring it in, take it out.

Start Stands – Joy Hoy has begun construction. Expected cost approximately $200. Does anyone have primer and paint they are willing to donate?

Buckets – Thank you to whoever donated the buckets to fix the fence.

Show and Tell

Jake Williams – presented a Top Flight kit for a FolkWulffe balsa aircraft. He currently has 7 hours into the build and hopes to complete by May.

Fred Sehnert – presented a flight box with various items – donating to anyone in need.

Albert Hibpshman – presented pictures of a Garden Extra 300 kit he is building.

New Business

Freeze or Fly – Jeannette Hibpschman rallied the cooks for the Soup Cook-off on 1 January 2009. Bring your crock-pot full of your favorite soup to compete. French Bread will be provided. Pot Luck style – come out and get that first flight of the year under your belt!

2009 Membership Renewal – to become a member, must complete an application and a field check. Dues are $25 for an individual, $35 for a family.

Safety Fence – Jake Williams made a motion which was seconded by Gary Smith to replace the buckets holding the safety fence with concrete patio umbrella stands. A counter-motion was made by Mike Howell and seconded by Steve Elmore to purchase bases, poles and wire not to exceed $200. A unanimous vote occurred and Steve Elmore will take the lead on the project.

Pylons – Steve Elmore recommended the racing pylons be moved 50 feet to the north for safety purposes. Dick Brace made a motion which was seconded by Mike Howell. A unanimous vote agreed to move the pylons. Steve Elmore has the lead.

Port-a-pot – Ray Morton has the lead for checking prices through United Site Service to place a port-a-pot at the field.

Safety

Cooler air means opening up needle valves to allow enough fuel to enter the carburetor. Ever notice that you get more power when it is cooler? Don’t run your engine lean and over heat it on a cool day. Lean engines can backfire, especially four strokes. Don’t be the one with your finger in the prop!

Glow plugs – remember to check your glow plug, better to replace it than an entire aircraft.

Upcoming Events

6 December – hot dogs and flying at Dr. Hook’s flying field in Auburn, hosted by the Sierra Foothill Flyers.

1 January – Freeze Fly at beale AFB.

Product Review/Lessons Learned

Lipo Batteries – do NOT leave unattended while charging. Always use the proper charging setting – don’t get anxious, it could cost you thousands in damages. It was recommended using a fire safe box to set batteries in while charging – usually around $30 at K-Mart. Some chargers recommended by club members include Triton, Hyperion, TP1010, or TP610. Proper charging is a must!

Meeting was adjourned at 2020.

Hangar Rash

Make sure each of your aircraft is carefully handled in the shop to keep that dreaded "hangar rash" from taking its toll on your airframe and covering. Sleeping bags can work for covering wings and sheets can keep dust off of fuselages.

New Business

Club Officer nominations opened.

Joe Hoy and Rick McCarthy, each nominated for president.

Jim Crites nominated for vice-president

Jeanette Hibpshman nominated to continue as Treasurer until she has a replacement.

Safety Officer will be filled by the new president.

Dues for next year – voted unanimously in favor of keeping them the same as this year, $25 individual, $35 family, E-4 and below FREE.

Safety

Electric Motors and Props

Many in the club had their first prop cuts with their first electric. It’s Quiet, it’s just sitting there, it’s DANGEROUS!

Treat a plane that is powered up like an idling glow motor!

TIP 1: Use a 4.8V pack plugged directly into the RX to set up your radio.

TIP 2: Remove the prop before powering up an electric plane on the bench to work on it.

Check RX Battery Voltage

If an RX battery voltage gets too low during a flight you will lose control of your aircraft and crash. Check the battery voltage BEFORE the first flight of every session, and between flights. A bad cell can be found before your plane crashes. Several people in the club have had a plane go down…they could swear they charged that pack the night before…or maybe the night before that…

TIP 1: Use a loaded volt meter with a 0.5 or 1 amp load to test your battery for an accurate reading.

TIP 2: If you are getting fewer flights with a battery than you used to then check the condition of your servos. You could have a bad servo.

TIP 3: If your battery is giving you fewer and fewer flights, REPLACE IT.

Upcoming Events

11 October (rain date), there will be a float fly at Scotts Flat Lake. Go North on Hwy 49 out of Auburn, continue on 20 East to the “Five Mile House” and turn right on Scott’s Flat Rd, go to the end. Sponsored by the Sierra Foothill Fliers.

10-12 October, Woodland-Davis Jet Fly, the last jet event at this grand location before it closes down next year. Take I-5 North to Rd 102, go South, see the field on your left.

17 October, indoor flying in Roseville at Chilton Middle School, 4501 Bob Doyle Drive, Roseville, CA 95747. Two basketball courts side-by-side and a second room the size of one court for small helis. Sponsored by AMOS.

September 2008

4 September 2008

Beale Blackbirds R/C Club Meeting

1923 – Meeting called to order at the Beale Community Activity Center, Reno Room

ATTENDEES:

Brian Yanik

Albert Hibpshman

Rick McCarthy

Ray Morton

Joseph Hoy

Richard Plummer

Dick Brace

Irwin Davis

Darryl Witt

Treasures Report:

Currently have approximately $1225.00 in the Club fund.

Old Business:

Mower – The mower rear tire is leaking. Ray Morton will take the lead on having a tube installed.

Minutes – The August minutes are on-line. Review at your leisure.

Lease – There is no news on the lease positive or negative. Continue flying at the field and enjoying it responsibly.

Float Fly – The August Float Fly used the Upper Blackwater Lake. Small turnout with six people, still a fun day of flying. The raft was much more stable than the Jon Boat we used last time, thanks Danny Weger for bringing the boat. Thank you to Rick McCarthy for picking up the electric motor and battery to power the boat.

Show and Tell

Darryl Witt presented a Thunder Tiger Champion 45L with an OS46 FX Engine. He stated it’s a good flying fun sport plane.

New Business:

Fall Fun Fly – Albert Hibpshman will head up a Fall Fun Fly tentatively scheduled for 25 October. Assistance is needed to make it happen successfully! We'll start planning and search for some raffle prizes. Look forward to grilled burgers, a spot landing contest, taxi contest and a whole lot of a good time.

Safety

Review the field rules so you are familiar with them. When it cools off you'll see more people at the flying field and will have to share the space.

Trash, take it with you! If you open the shed, please secure it. Let’s make the field a safe and fun place to fly that stays clean.

Watch the heat, it can cause engines to run lean. Richen up the high end needle on your glow engine so you see a good stream of smoke while flying...no smoke means you're lean!

Start Stands – Joe Hoy will donate plywood and labor to build two new starter stands. He needs $200 for other lumber. A motion was made by Dick Brace and seconded by Ray Morton, unanimous vote to spend the $200 for lumber.

Upcoming Events

6 Sept starting at 0800, there will be a fun fly at Bob Hooks field hosted by the Sierra Foothills Flyers.

4 October, there will be a float fly at Scotts Flat. Sponsored by the Sierra Foothill Fliers.

Product Review / Lessons Learned

If you own a JR X9303 radio, check the aileron wires. They have been known to wear against a microchip inside the TX case. Fix it by wrapping it with electrical tape and tucking the wire in under other wires. Many on-line forums have pictures that show the problem and the fix.

Charger plugs for transmitters – double check all of your charger plugs, a loose or worn plug can cause a short and/or blown fuse.

Meeting was adjourned at 2010.

New member introductions. Also, some people we haven't seen before at a meeting! Greet everyone you see at the model field, you just never know who you might run into.

OLD BUSINESS

Float Fly was a resounding success! We made over $100 in profit from raffle tickets.
Rick McCarthy relayed his story about the retrieval boat and how not to do it. He witnessed Jon Sorensen attempt to retrieve an aircraft by himself using the retrieval boat. No one to balance out the boat, and it went over! Batteries and motor had to be retrieved from more than six feet of water. Thanks Rick for the great recovery!

Thank you:

Danny Weger for overseeing the float fly event as the Event Coordinator.
Chuck Zidek for running the registration table.
Jeanette Hibpshman for running the raffle and for acquiring the great prizes.
Brian Yanik and Rick McCarthy for retrieving 15 planes from the lake.

HQ ACC holds our lease request and insurance waiver request. We'll keep hoping that $2.5 mil is enough for the big wigs.

The Control Burn request is in and will be honored in the next few weeks. Please make sure you bring in the pylons when you are done using them. Also, if you see smoke at the field, come back another day.

SHOW AND TELL

Jeanette Hibpshman showed off her DA-100 with an Azure 4 inch carbon fiber single-bolt spinner, Silent Beauty compact mufflers and PT Models 27x10 carbon fiber prop.

Chuck Zidek and Al Hibpshman explained how the two of them came together with floats and a cub to create a winner. The Cub was in Chuck's garage rafters for many years, the floats came from Fred Price. The .40 sized Piper Cub is covered in fabric and is powered by an O.S. 70 four-stroke.

Steve Elmore and Jake Williams told us about their Bronze pylon racing warbirds. They are practicing to compete down in Sacramento at the races soon.

NEW BUSINESS

Safety and professional aeromodeling were the theme of the float fly. Many thanks to all members who displayed the kind of flying and cooperation that makes a fun fly...FUN! There were NO crashes and everyone flew, dispite the 15 mph winds.

Frequency control is important when using the LAKE. Mike Howell is looking into a way to notify other pilots that there is a pilot on the LAKE using a particular channel.

Steve Elmore is looking into the possibiliites of getting a retrieval boat for float flying at Beale. Members would like to fly on a regular basis and they might need to recover a plane where swimming may not be feasible.

SAFETY

Keep up the great COMMUNICATION at the flying field. Please make it a habit to talk with the people that are flying with you. Call out your intentions when flying. Simple, straight forward notification is all that other pilots need to maintain awareness of where you are and what you're about to do.

"Taking off, right to left" or "Deadstick!" are examples of essential communication while flying with others.

OPEN FLOOR

Bring SUNSCREEN, bug repellent and WATER to the flying field with you while flying this Summer!

Next meeting will be Thursday, 10 July 2008 at the FLYING FIELD, 1900.

Safety

Brian Yanik presented some safety concerns with the start of the new season:

1. Ensure models receive a good inspection and fix and issues that may exist from last season. Check props and replace/rebalance.
2. Verify charge of batteries – Danny Weger stated the need to check battery loads as he had a dead cell which caused him to lose an aircraft. Danny recommended using a load meter on all batteries to eliminate potential problems. Also, accomplish a range check at the field prior to the first flight.
3. Snakes – yes, it is that time of year again and rattlers have been sighted at the field. Be aware of your surroundings and used extra caution if you walk out into the grass areas.
4. Buddy system – always fly with a buddy.
5. Finally, if you do have an incident, please make all efforts to clean up the crash site – it’s best interest for the environment and for the club.

Let’s make every flight this season a safe one!

Miscellaneous

www.roughandreadyaviation.com – good source for light, easily repairable electrics for anyone interested in participating in indoor flying events.

Adjournment

Danny Weger – motioned
Kevin Sparks – Second

The next hour was spent flying the simulator on the big screen. Several members attempted high wind/high turbulence flights. Many oohs, aahhs, and laughs were enjoyed as pilots gained an appreciation for this invaluable training tool!

WELCOME BACK!

UPDATE: Our very own land manager, Glenn Leonard, is continuing to work on the land lease and insurance waiver to allow 2.5 million dollars worth of insurance to suffice for coverage.
The lease might take a few months and the club is ready to work with him to preserve a magnificent flying site and culture that have kept the heritage of aviation on Beale AFB alive.
Additionally, the wing will have to submit our request up to HQ ACC for approval. This process should be complete by Fall 2008.

Meanwhile, the BBRCC officers will pursue an agreement with the land manager to reinstall the safety and usability enhancements to the RC flying field. The plan will be to re-install these items at the Spring work day, date TBD. If the lease is not approved by HQ ACC the "improvements" will have to be removed again.
